Series : The Art of Lainey #1
Perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins, Sarah Dessen, and Susane Colasanti, The Art of Lainey tells the story of how, with the help of The Art of War, Lainey plots the perfect plan to get her boyfriend back. But is getting him back really what she wants?
Soccer star Lainey Mitchell is gearing up to spend an epic summer with her amazing boyfriend, Jason, when he suddenly breaks up with her—no reasons, no warnings, and in public no less! Lainey is more than crushed, but with help from her friend Bianca, she resolves to do whatever it takes to get Jason back.
And that’s when Lainey and Bianca stumble across a copy of The Art of War. With just one glance, the girls are sure they can use the book to lure Jason back into Lainey’s arms. So Lainey channels her inner warlord, recruiting spies to gather intel and persuading her coworker Micah to pose as her new boyfriend to make Jason jealous.
After a few “dates,” it looks like her plan is going to work! But now her relationship with Micah is starting to feel like more than just a game. Can fighting for what she wants help Lainey figure out what she really needs?
FIrst of all I just want to say that I loved how the novel revolved around The Art of War. So so nerdy even for me. I loved it! One thing that I also loved about this book was the fantastic character growth. Lainey went from being ” I can’t live without him because who am I without him im nobody” to ” I am going to be who I want to be whether I am with anybody because they do not define me ” All throughout the book I was saying girl you have got to get your shit together because that guy is definitely not right for you. If somebody is making yiu change who you are then they are not definitely worthy of anything from you. I loved that in the end she stood up and suck it all up and admit her mistakes and wrongs and grew up.
Her relationship with Jayson may seem healtht for her but actually it’s not. She thinks he’s her foundation and that is not healthy in a relationship. It must be the both of you growing together and growing yourselves too.
I loved how Lainey helped Leo and Leo and Bianca and all the cute things those two were dancing around in each other.
Lainey and Micah are so cute together I puked rainbows. Hahahaha! Just kidding but srsly those two radiated happiness without them even knowing. It may come as an unbidden and unwarranted attraction at first but maybe their own breakups are the sign they needed to grow more and grow together.
Lainey and Kendalls’s friendship is on the rocks. One time I may think Kendall is a complete bitch but she does things that are sincere and I think she actually cares for Lainey but she cares more fot herself.
In conclusion, I give this book 4 Royal Stars because it tackled self growth and I am all for maturity. I recommend this book to all of you who ate finding coming of age books.
